Joan of Arc grew up in a poor farming family in northeast France and helped to look after the farm animals. Like many other children in her village, she didn’t go to school and never learned to read or write. From the age of 13, Joan of Arc received regular visits from angels. When she was 16 years old, these angels brought her a message saying that she must become the savior of France by leading an army to defeat the English, who France had been at war with for 60 years.
Joan of Arc is a national heroine in France and there are statues of her all over the country, including at Orléans, the city she drove the English from in 1429. There are even statues of Saint Joan in other countries, including the United States. A statue of Joan of Arc was unveiled in 1972 in New Orleans, Louisiana – a gift from the French people to honor the city’s French heritage.
